Series 7 Intek Ohv V-Twin - 40N8770071 - Briggs & Stratton

The Briggs & Stratton 7220 EXi is a 656cc V-twin petrol engine at the top end of what Briggs & Stratton produce for ride-on mowers and garden tractors. Two cylinders rather than one changes the character of the engine significantly — power delivery is smoother, vibration is lower, and the engine handles sustained heavy cutting loads with noticeably less strain than a single-cylinder unit of equivalent or even higher output. At 22HP and 16.2kW gross, this is the engine that goes into the larger end of the domestic tractor market and the lighter end of commercial grounds machinery.

V-Twin Architecture

The two cylinders are arranged in a V configuration, which gives this engine its natural balance advantage. The firing intervals of a V-twin are inherently more even than a single cylinder, which means the engine runs with less vibration and more consistent torque delivery across the RPM range. On a machine cutting an acre or more in a single session, this translates to a noticeably smoother ride and less fatigue-inducing vibration through the frame and seat.

OHV with Cast-Iron Cylinder Sleeves

Both cylinders are lined with cast-iron sleeves, bringing the same durability benefits found on the single-cylinder Intek range to a higher-output twin configuration. The overhead valve layout on each cylinder promotes cleaner combustion and keeps operating temperatures lower under sustained load — important on an engine that may be running for several hours at a stretch during heavy cutting seasons.

Full Pressure Lubrication with Spin-On Oil Filter

A pressurised oil circuit actively delivers lubricant to the crankshaft bearings, cam followers and other critical components throughout both cylinders. The spin-on oil filter keeps the oil circuit clean, trapping wear particles before they can recirculate. With an oil capacity of 1.9 litres across the twin-cylinder block, this is a well-lubricated engine that maintains its internal tolerances over a long service life. The full pressure system is also more tolerant of operation on sloped or uneven ground than a splash-lubricated unit, which is relevant on large estate or paddock mowing where terrain is rarely perfectly flat.

Electric Start & Charging System

Starting is by electric starter motor only — no recoil on this engine. The 9-amp charging system maintains battery charge during operation and supports the electrical demands of the host machine's accessories.

Advanced Debris Management System

The 7220 EXi features Briggs & Stratton's Advanced Debris Management System, which actively deflects and ejects grass clippings and debris away from the engine's cooling fins and air intake during operation. On a machine that is producing large volumes of clippings in a single session, debris accumulation around the engine is a genuine cause of overheating and reduced service life — this system addresses it directly.

Fuel Pump

A mechanical fuel pump is fitted as standard. Given the engine's displacement and the size of machine it typically powers, remote tank mounting is virtually universal in this application — the fuel pump is essential rather than optional.

Muffler

No muffler is included with this engine. Muffler configurations vary depending on the machine being repowered, and the correct type depends on the exhaust routing of the host equipment. Contact us for guidance if you also need a replacement muffler.

Fitment & Compatibility

The vertical crankshaft is 25.4mm (1 inch) in diameter and 80mm (3 5/32 inches) in length, drilled and tapped 7/16-20 with a 1/4 inch keyway. This replaces previous models 40N8770039 and 40N8770037B5AF0001. If you need to confirm whether this engine suits your machine, contact us with your original engine's model, type, and code numbers and our staff will advise.
