Briggs & Stratton 31R7770010B5CC0001 | 4175 Intek OHV Vertical Crankshaft Engine (17.5HP)
At 500cc and 17.5HP, the Briggs & Stratton 4175 Intek OHV sits in the middle ground between the lighter domestic engines and the heavier-output professional units — which is precisely where many larger lawn tractors and ride-on mowers operate.
Producing 12.9kW gross and 30.66Nm of torque at 3600rpm, it has the pulling power to deal with longer grass, inclines and PTO-driven attachments without labouring. What sets this particular variant apart from standard Intek engines is the pressure lubrication system with spin-on oil filter — a step up in engine care that makes a genuine difference over time.
OHV with Cast-Iron Cylinder Sleeve
The 4175 Intek uses overhead valve technology throughout, with the valves positioned directly above the combustion chamber rather than in the block. This geometry allows for a more compact combustion space and better thermal management during extended running.
The cylinder itself is lined with a cast-iron sleeve — worth noting because standard Intek engines typically run an aluminium bore. Cast iron holds its dimensional tolerances better over years of use, which means the piston rings continue sealing effectively long after a bare aluminium bore would have worn oval.
Pressure Lubrication with Spin-On Oil Filter
Rather than relying on oil splash reaching moving parts at random, this engine runs a pressurised lubrication circuit that actively delivers oil to the crankshaft bearings, camshaft and other load-bearing components. The spin-on filter traps contaminants before they can circulate and cause abrasive wear. The practical upshot is an engine that stays cleaner internally, runs more consistently on uneven ground, and gives longer intervals between oil changes. Oil capacity is approximately 1.4 litres.
Electric Start & 9-Amp Charging System
A 12V electric starter handles ignition duties, with no recoil backup. The 9-amp alternator keeps the battery charged while the engine runs and has enough headroom to power electric PTO clutches, lighting or any other 12V electrical loads the host machine carries.
AVS® Anti-Vibration System
Single-cylinder engines inherently produce a degree of vibration that twins do not. The AVS system on this engine uses a counterbalancing arrangement to smooth the power pulses, reducing what gets transmitted through the machine's chassis. Over a full season of use, this noticeably reduces operator fatigue and slows the rate at which vibration-related wear develops in the machine's fittings and mountings.
Fuel Pump
A mechanical fuel pump is fitted as standard, drawing fuel from the machine's remote tank to the carburettor. This is the typical arrangement on tractors and ride-on mowers where the tank is mounted away from the engine rather than sitting directly above the carburettor inlet.
Muffler Included
A muffler comes fitted to this engine. Please note that the supplied muffler may not be compatible with every application — if your machine's exhaust routing differs, remove the supplied unit and reconnect the original from your old engine.
Fitment & Compatibility
The vertical crankshaft is 25.4mm (1 inch) in diameter and 80.19mm (3.15 inches) in length, a configuration shared across a wide span of ride-on mower and tractor platforms from manufacturers including Stiga, Husqvarna, MTD, Mountfield, Murray and others. If you need confirmation of fitment before ordering, contact us with your original engine's Model, Type and Code numbers and our staff will advise.

Good Old fashioned Customer service
The level of customer service from start to finish. The level of detail was first class happily guiding me to the manual and highlighting the spare parts I needed. They managed my expectations professionally explaining delivery would take 4 weeks due to the fact the part would have to come from the states. These guys are professional and this is reflected in everything they do -Highly Recommended
